According to Nivo News, the President announced that the 2026 appropriation bill, tagged Budget of Consolidation, Renewed Resilience and Shared Prosperity, represents a decisive turning point in Nigeria’s fiscal management, introducing what he described as a “hard reset” to the budgeting process.
Tinubu disclosed that all outstanding capital liabilities from previous years would be fully funded by March 2026, stressing that the country would transition to a single-budget system from April 2026 with no provision for rollover spending. He said the move is aimed at strengthening fiscal discipline, improving project execution and restoring confidence in government finances.
Addressing lawmakers during the presentation, the President issued a stern warning to criminal elements, vowing that the government would adopt a far more aggressive and uncompromising approach in tackling insecurity nationwide. He declared that there would be no mercy for terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and perpetrators of violent crimes, adding that Nigeria’s security architecture would be fundamentally restructured to confront emerging threats more decisively.
Details from the budget proposal show that the 2026 fiscal framework is based on a crude oil production benchmark of 1.84 million barrels per day, with an exchange rate projection of ₦1,400 to the United States dollar.
Sectoral allocations indicate a strong focus on national security and infrastructure, with defence and security receiving the highest allocation of ₦5.41 trillion. Infrastructure followed with ₦3.56 trillion, while education was allocated ₦3.52 trillion. The health sector is set to receive ₦2.48 trillion under the proposed spending plan.
President Tinubu maintained that the 2026 budget is designed to consolidate ongoing reforms, enhance economic resilience and ensure that the benefits of growth are more widely shared among Nigerians.
