According to Nivo News, Gwamnishu had been detained by the police in Edo State after being accused of diverting part of a crowdfunded ransom meant to secure the release of a kidnapped couple. The controversy arose from funds raised to free Mr. and Mrs. Segiru, who were abducted from their home in the Aviele community near Auchi on November 22, 2025.
The ransom issue was brought to public attention by Abdulganiyu Oseni, the elder brother of the abducted woman, who accused Gwamnishu of misappropriating the money through his Safe City Volunteer Foundation, which had offered to mediate with the kidnappers.
Oseni disclosed that the family raised over ₦20 million, along with an additional ₦50,000, after days of intense fundraising efforts to meet the kidnappers’ demands. He alleged that Gwamnishu diverted a significant portion of the funds for personal use.
In a strongly worded statement shared on social media, Oseni described Gwamnishu as a “thief,” accusing him of stealing money the family struggled for more than 10 days to raise. He further claimed that only ₦5.4 million was eventually remitted to the Auchi Area Police Command before Gwamnishu allegedly left the area.
Oseni maintained that the alleged diversion of the ransom endangered the lives of the abducted couple, noting that the kidnappers were expected to count the full amount before releasing their captives. He claimed the shortfall resulted in only the wife being released, while her husband remained in captivity at the time.
In the latest development, an aide to the Delta State Governor, Ossai Success Ovie, announced via a Facebook post on Friday that the Edo State High Court had granted Gwamnishu bail. The post suggested that those pushing the allegations were disappointed by the court’s decision, describing the outcome as a failed attempt to tarnish the activist’s image.
