Nigerian Aircraft Detained In Burkina Faso: House Demands Immediate Government Intervention.
The House of Representatives has resolved to engage top officials from the Ministries of Defence and Foreign Affairs regarding the ongoing detention of a Nigerian aircraft and its crew in Burkina Faso.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The decision followed the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance presented by Ekiti lawmaker Rufus Ojuawo, who emphasized the need for swift government action. Lawmakers urged the President Bola Tinubu administration to utilize Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and African Union (AU) mechanisms to foster cooperation, ensure mutual understanding, and secure the expedited release of the aircraft and personnel.
The House also called on the Office of the National Security Adviser to coordinate inter-agency communication, ensuring that national security concerns are addressed without escalation. Additionally, the lawmakers demanded that the Federal Government provide accurate public briefings to counter misinformation while safeguarding sensitive diplomatic and security operations.
During the debate, Ojuawo explained that the Nigerian Air Force C‑130 aircraft was on an authorized ferry flight to Portugal for routine depot maintenance—a mandatory lifecycle requirement—when it made a precautionary landing in Burkina Faso on December 8, 2025. He emphasized that the landing was conducted purely on safety grounds, fully documented, and in accordance with international aviation standards. The aircraft was not on an operational mission or involved in intelligence or surveillance activities.
The House expressed displeasure over the continued detention of Nigeria’s aircraft and military personnel, describing the situation as unacceptable. Following the motion’s adoption, the House directed its Committees on Foreign Affairs, Defence, Nigerian Air Force, and National Security to engage with the Ministry of Defence and other relevant agencies to resolve all related issues, with a report expected within two weeks.
