“No Escape For Malami: Deji Adeyanju Demands EFCC Probe Into Abacha Loot Handling”.
Controversy continues to surround former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami, as human rights activist Deji Adeyanju called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to thoroughly investigate the ex-minister, dismissing his claims of persecution.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Adeyanju described Malami’s allegation of a “deep-seated historical animosity” and a “personal vendetta” by the EFCC following his defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as “unfortunate.” He emphasized that the EFCC has a clear responsibility to probe Malami’s tenure, particularly regarding the management of recovered public funds.
“The EFCC should proceed without hesitation to investigate Mr. Malami, especially in relation to his handling of issues surrounding the Abacha loot,” Adeyanju said, stressing that public office is a trust requiring accountability.
The activist noted that Malami’s past use of state power against political opponents undercuts his current claims of victimization. “Malami wielded state power without restraint while in government. Having prosecuted others, he cannot now evade the same scrutiny,” Adeyanju added.
Adeyanju’s remarks followed Malami’s demand that the EFCC either arraign him within 24 hours or release him, citing constitutional protections against unlawful detention. The former AGF had also called for the immediate recusal of the EFCC Chairman from his investigation, alleging political persecution linked to his defection and citing alleged “illegal detention, media harassment, and procedural abuse.”
Malami claimed the probe was influenced by past events connected to the Justice Ayo Salami Judicial Commission of Inquiry, which investigated the EFCC during his tenure. He stated, “I have been clearly pre-judged and cannot receive a fair, objective or lawful investigation under the current leadership of the EFCC.”
The EFCC, however, denied allegations of political persecution, insisting that its actions, including Malami’s temporary detention for failing to meet administrative bail conditions, are strictly guided by law.
