The move, initiated by the House Joint Committee on Petroleum Resources, co-chaired by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere and Hon. Henry Okogie, comes amid concerns that escalating public disputes could undermine the sector’s stability following recent subsidy reforms. The committee has directed both parties to halt all media commentary until the investigation is concluded, promising a swift review.
Hon. Ugochinyere explained that the emergency meeting was prompted by Dangote’s public accusations against NMDPRA Chief Executive, Farouk Ahmed, claiming corruption and questioning Ahmed’s ability to fund six years of foreign education for four of his children, reportedly costing $5 million. Dangote argued that taxpayers deserve accountability and transparency from public officials.
The NMDPRA has not yet formally responded to the allegations. The House Committee noted that petitions regarding critical industry issues, including the issuance of import licences and the capacity of local refineries to meet national demand, have been received and will be thoroughly investigated.
Ugochinyere emphasized that a full understanding of these issues is necessary for sustainable solutions. “By the time Alhaji Aliko Dangote, the NMDPRA, and other stakeholders meet with the committee, we will obtain a clear picture and develop resolutions that ensure long-term stability for the sector,” he said.
The lawmakers also appealed for restraint from all parties to prevent further escalation, particularly in public and media statements, as the investigation proceeds.
