Defenders Salim Fago and Chidozie Awaziem were the latest to join the camp, adding depth to head coach Eric Chelle’s squad ahead of the high-profile friendly against Egypt scheduled for 7 p.m. Nigerian time.
Goalkeepers Francis Uzoho, Stanley Nwabali, and Amas Obasogie participated in the training session, alongside defenders Calvin Bassey, Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Zaidu Sanusi, and Igho Ogbu. Midfielders Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and Akinsanmiro Ebenezer were also present, with attacking responsibilities led by Ademola Lookman, Paul Onuachu, Cyril Dessers, Akor Adams, and Chidera Ejuke.
However, the match will see the absence of some of African football’s top talents. Egypt’s Mohamed Salah, Omar Marmoush, and Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen will all miss the encounter as both teams adopt a cautious approach to player fitness. Salah and Marmoush were rested after arriving late in camp, while Osimhen has yet to join the Nigerian contingent in Cairo following his departure from Galatasaray in Turkey.
Egyptian coach Hossam Hassan trained 26 players on Monday evening, focusing on tactical work ahead of their AFCON opener against Zimbabwe on December 22. Minor fitness issues have also shaped Egypt’s preparations, with Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet sidelined due to a dental procedure and midfielder Ibrahim Adel recovering from an ankle injury. Both are expected to be available for the tournament.
The Egyptian Football Association confirmed that international referee Mahmoud Nagi will officiate the friendly, assisted by Samir Gamal and Youssef El-Basaty, with VAR in operation. Egypt will travel to Morocco on Wednesday evening to complete their AFCON build-up.
