The Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda S. Olufemi, disclosed the developments on December 15, 2025, during a press briefing held in Asaba, where he presented an overview of the command’s security operations and achievements within the period under review.
The police boss explained that the successes were achieved through intelligence-driven and community-oriented policing strategies, carried out in collaboration with other security agencies, vigilante groups, anti-cult volunteers, traditional institutions, and civil organizations to curb criminal activities and safeguard lives and property across the state.
Among the notable cases highlighted was the killing of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu at her residence on November 24, 2025. Investigations led operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department to arrest a 25-year-old security guard attached to the home on December 6, 2025, after a mobile phone belonging to the deceased was found in his possession. Further inquiries resulted in the arrest of another suspect, while a third individual connected to the crime is currently at large. One of the stolen phones was later recovered at Ogbogonogo Market in Asaba, as investigations continue.
In another operation carried out on December 1, 2025, officers of the State Anti-Cult Unit, working alongside community volunteers, stormed a forest in Obiaruku following credible intelligence on kidnapping activities. During the encounter, one suspect was neutralized, while others escaped into the forest. An AK-47 rifle, forty-two rounds of ammunition, mobile phones, and charms were recovered from the scene.
On December 6, 2025, operatives attached to the Commissioner’s Special Assignment Team conducted a search operation in Abraka, leading to the arrest of a 67-year-old suspect at his residence in the Umeghe community. Two pump-action guns and thirty-nine live cartridges were recovered during the operation, and the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue into possible criminal affiliations.
Coordinated raids carried out between November 28 and 29, 2025, in Ughelli, Oghara, and Sapele resulted in the arrest of three suspects linked to armed robbery and cult-related activities. Police recovered two stolen tricycles, a locally made shotgun, a locally fabricated pistol, and ammunition from the suspects.
The command also recorded major successes in its fight against drug-related crimes. On December 10, 2025, a raid led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations uncovered a drug hideout in Agbor, Ika South Local Government Area, leading to the arrest of 161 suspects, including men and women, and the recovery of various illicit substances. Three days later, another operation intercepted a commercial bus along the Asaba–Onitsha expressway, where large quantities of codeine and tramadol were discovered and suspects apprehended.
Over the course of the year, the Delta State Police Command recovered a total of 144 firearms, including assault rifles, pistols, locally fabricated weapons, and pump-action guns. Additionally, 6,930 rounds of ammunition were seized, while thirty-six million naira was recovered as ransom from criminal operations.
The police also confirmed the arrest of 627 suspects linked to offences ranging from armed robbery, kidnapping, murder, cultism, rape, and defilement. Eighteen kidnapped victims were successfully rescued, and twenty-eight stolen vehicles were recovered.
The Commissioner of Police commended officers of the command for their dedication and professionalism, while also appreciating the support of the media, traditional rulers, community leaders, and residents of the state. As the festive season draws near, residents were urged to remain vigilant, obey the law, and promptly share useful information with security agencies, as the command assured its preparedness to ensure a peaceful Christmas and New Year celebration across Delta State.
