Tax ID Confusion Sparks Fear Ahead Of January 2026 Reforms, Oyedele Explains.
According to Nivo News, Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, has attributed the widespread anxiety over Nigeria’s upcoming tax reforms to a lack of public awareness. Speaking to the media over the weekend, Oyedele explained that many Nigerians are encountering aspects of the tax system for the first time.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He noted that much of the information regarding Tax Identification Numbers (TIN), Taxpayer Identification Numbers, and the monthly reporting requirements on individual bank accounts has long been established in the 2020 Finance Act.
Oyedele emphasized that misconceptions about the new law are fueling panic. “Because the level of tax awareness in Nigeria is so poor, people are finding out so many things for the first time. They just assume that the new tax law is introducing them. This one is actually not,” he said.
He further clarified that no bank, government agency, or private body has the authority to arbitrarily withdraw funds from individuals’ accounts. Oyedele explained the legal process for unpaid taxes, noting that it involves written notices, assessments, and judicial review, rather than immediate deductions.
“Even if you have N1 billion in the account, nobody can debit your bank account. The law includes what we call power of substitution. In some countries, this is referred to as a garnishee order,” he added.
Oyedele’s remarks come amid growing uncertainty as the January 2026 implementation of the 2025 Nigeria Tax Administration Act approaches. He reiterated that all taxable Nigerians must possess a valid tax ID to operate their accounts legally.
