Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Mo Abudu Shine as Forbes Names World’s Most Powerful Women 2025.

The annual list, released on Wednesday, celebrates women making significant impacts in global business, politics, culture, and technology. Dr. Okonjo-Iweala secured the 92nd position, making history as the first African and first woman to lead the WTO, a role she has held since March 2021. Forbes described her as “an economist and international development professional” with over 30 years of experience across Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
Dr. Okonjo-Iweala previously served as Nigeria’s Finance Minister from 2003 to 2006 and 2011 to 2015, and briefly as Foreign Minister in 2006. She also chaired the Board of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, which has immunized more than 760 million children worldwide. A Harvard University graduate with a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the 71-year-old is renowned for advocating trade as a tool to alleviate poverty in developing countries.
Mo Abudu, founder of EbonyLife Media, was ranked 98th. Forbes highlighted her as “one of the most influential women in global media.” Since launching EbonyLife TV in 2006, the channel has expanded to over 49 countries, including the UK and the Caribbean. Under her leadership, EbonyLife has secured major content deals with Sony Pictures Television, AMC Networks, and Netflix, becoming the first African media company to sign a multi-title agreement with the streaming platform. In November 2025, EbonyLife launched its digital platform, EbonyLife ON Plus, on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
Born in London and raised in Nigeria during her early years, Abudu has successfully built a global media empire that reflects the growing influence of African women in entertainment and business.
Topping the 2025 Forbes list is European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, followed by European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde, Japan’s first female Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, and Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum. Other notable figures include AMD CEO Lisa Su, Alphabet CFO Ruth Porat, Microsoft CFO Amy Hood, and Meta CFO Susan Li. The list also celebrates emerging leaders in entertainment and technology, including Kim Kardashian and the women of Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters.
