The victims were part of a demonstration by residents demanding government protection from repeated attacks by unidentified assailants targeting their communities. Witnesses said the protest, led by women chanting for help, escalated after weeks of violent incursions left several villages exposed and fearful.
Eyewitnesses reported that chaos erupted when military personnel allegedly attempted to disperse the gathering, resulting in live ammunition being fired into the crowd. The violence reportedly spread to nearby villages, including Tingno, Suwa, Balaifi, Wami 1, Wami 2, and Waduku, with some communities said to have been set on fire.
