The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Isah Suleiman, confirmed the discovery in a statement issued on Saturday. The Customs Area Controller, Emmanuel Oshoba, praised the operation, attributing the success to the strengthened collaboration between the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency.
Oshoba explained that intelligence reports revealed the vessel had previously berthed at ports in Honduras, Guatemala and other locations known for illicit drug activities after departing its home port in Brazil. He emphasized that the operation reflects the unwavering commitment of the Service to uphold legitimate trade in Apapa Port, in line with the zero-tolerance directive of the Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi.
During the handover of the seized cocaine to the NDLEA for further investigation, Oshoba announced that the vessel had been detained as part of ongoing enforcement measures. He noted that the seizure demonstrates the effectiveness of joint profiling and intelligence operations carried out by both agencies, stressing that criminal networks will not be allowed to infiltrate the nation’s ports.
He warned traffickers and other perpetrators of illegal trade activities that the Customs Service will continue to tighten security, especially as the festive season approaches. Oshoba added that all cargo leaving Apapa Port must undergo proper inspection to ensure full compliance with declarations and national security protocols.
