Ex-Petroleum Minister Seeks EFCC Probe Date, Denies Jumping Bail.
Former Minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, has reached out to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, requesting that a date be scheduled for him to appear before investigators over an alleged $14.8 million fraud. According to Nivo News, the development follows the agency’s recent declaration of the ex-minister as wanted, a move Sylva said came as a surprise.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a letter dated November 24 and acknowledged by the EFCC on November 26, Sylva affirmed that he had no intention of avoiding the probe, insisting that his absence was solely due to an ongoing medical condition. He appealed for a mutually agreed date to meet with investigators, subject to medical clearance, while maintaining that the invitation was for an investigation and not intended to place him in harm’s way.
The former Bayelsa State governor explained that he is currently undergoing urgent medical treatment for a life-threatening ailment and is awaiting confirmation from his doctors on when it would be safe for him to honour the invitation. He recalled that he had previously responded to an EFCC summons in December 2024, after which he was granted administrative bail on self-recognition and never contacted again.
Sylva dismissed claims that he had jumped bail or evaded lawful invitation, stressing that no bail conditions were issued or breached. He argued that such allegations could create public confusion and misrepresent his conduct.
The former minister further highlighted what he described as troubling incidents, including an armed raid on his Abuja residence during which some of his aides, drivers, security personnel, and domestic workers were arrested and have yet to be released. He warned that the sequence of events could be construed as politically motivated, noting that many might interpret the situation as part of a broader pattern of targeted actions against him since the onset of the current administration.
