Gumi Sparks Outrage: ‘Nigeria Must Confront Attackers, Not Victims First’.
According to Nivo News, Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has argued that Nigeria’s security efforts should focus more on stopping those responsible for violent attacks rather than placing initial attention on victims. He believes this approach is crucial to breaking the cycle of killings across the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Tuesday, Gumi maintained that the most effective way to halt the escalating violence is to directly engage the attackers and prevent them from causing further harm. He explained his viewpoint using a medical analogy, noting that in emergencies, the priority is to stop ongoing damage before treating injuries.
Gumi rejected claims that his stance favours armed groups, stressing that state structures and emergency agencies already exist to cater to victims. He said the immediate concern should be disarming those perpetrating the violence.
“When you have an emergency, the first step is to stop the bleeding,” he said. “Imagine a mentally unstable person in a market at night stabbing people. My approach is to take the knife from him first, not to attend to those already injured.”
He added that victims are not being ignored, as government authorities and established agencies have the necessary systems to provide support. He emphasised that he is not in a position to care for every affected individual, but his priority is ensuring that “blood stops flowing.”
Drawing from years of encounters with bandits, Gumi insisted that his method is a practical solution that government officials also recognise but have failed to implement due to political differences. He likened the banditry crisis to an untreated illness that requires a proper diagnosis before a lasting remedy can be found.
He argued that authorities must examine the underlying causes of the insecurity problem, saying, “If you want to cure a disease, you have to go back and see the psychologist — what caused the disease.”
