The national launch, held at the State House in Abuja, highlighted the First Lady’s vision to cultivate a generation of environmentally conscious citizens capable of promoting sustainability in schools, communities, and tertiary institutions.
During her speech, Senator Tinubu commended young climate advocates, singling out Senior Secondary School 3 student Esther Abraham of Government Senior Secondary School, Mabushi, for her compelling poem on environmental protection. “From Esther, I see the passion and the love. When she recited, I saw a woman in love with the environment. It was like a message of love,” the First Lady said, expressing hope to work with the youth in advancing the initiative.
Selected students were presented with membership kits, including cards, handbooks, and practical tools to support their roles in the clubs. “To the glory of God and for the benefit of humanity, we are giving you your working tools,” she stated.
Reflecting on her personal background, Mrs. Tinubu said her studies in educational biology and experience teaching environmental sanitation fueled her commitment to nature. “My love for plants inspired me in my studies. Young people are the right ambassadors to drive this programme we launch today,” she added.
The First Lady outlined the objectives of the clubs, which include promoting environmental preservation, biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and fostering eco-friendly mindsets among young Nigerians. The initiative also encourages innovation, alternative livelihoods, and green entrepreneurship.
Her rallying motto, “Go Green Today for a Greener Tomorrow,” resonated throughout the event. For secondary school clubs, responsibilities include maintaining clean school environments, recycling, tree planting, discouraging plastic use, and raising climate awareness. University-based societies will lead shoreline clean-ups, reforestation efforts, and campus-wide advocacy for sustainable practices.
Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritizes environmental sustainability, youth empowerment, and inclusive growth. She also commended the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, and his team, while urging governors’ wives to support environmental commissioners in their respective states.
