Yusuf, an English and Literature teacher, emerged top after a rigorous assessment process overseen by a judging panel led by Professor Pat Utomi. Her victory came with a trophy, a foreign capacity-building programme, and infrastructure projects worth N30m for her school.
She revealed that her success was the outcome of “self-development, focus, diligence, resilience, dedication, mentorship, collaboration and the grace of God,” noting that the announcement came as a surprise despite encouragement from colleagues. She described her win as the moment “preparation meets opportunity.”
Yusuf stated that the N10m prize would be channelled into expanding her work with vulnerable children, especially those in underserved communities. She highlighted plans to support pupils whose parents cannot afford school fees, improve menstrual hygiene for girls, assist children living in slums, and embark on projects aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.
With this achievement, Yusuf joins the distinguished list of past winners dating back to 2015, including educators from Anambra, Abuja, Adamawa, Delta, Plateau, Lagos, and Nasarawa states.
At the event, Adeola Akinselure of Omole Senior Grammar School, Lagos, emerged first runner-up with a N5m award, while the second runner-up, Amarikwa Chibuzor of Deeper Life High School, Yola, received N3m.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmed, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to policies that strengthen the welfare and professionalism of teachers. Prof. Utomi also emphasised the need for more initiatives celebrating teachers as the nation’s silent heroes.
Delivering the keynote speech, 11-year-old Ayomide Avoseh, a Slum2School beneficiary from Makoko, urged Nigeria to prioritise investment in teachers and ensure safer learning environments, stressing that “the future of Nigeria is in classrooms.”
Chairman of the Nigeria Breweries–Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund, Thibaut Boidin, praised teachers as the country’s true wealth. Nigerian Breweries’ Corporate Affairs Director, Uzodinma Odenigbo, disclosed that more than 2,000 entries were received for this year’s competition—over 30 per cent higher than the previous year—reflecting the increasing relevance of the award.
Top dignitaries at the ceremony included the Registrar of the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, Mrs Ronke Soyombo, and representatives of the Lagos State Government. The Maltina Teacher of the Year initiative, launched in 2015, aims to elevate teaching standards nationwide by rewarding excellence with substantial cash prizes, professional training abroad, and school infrastructure support.
