We Won’t Keep Quiet’: CAN Backs International Outcry Over Attacks On Christians.

Published

on

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed support for the rising international pressure on the Federal Government over the relentless attacks on Christian communities across the country. According to Nivo News, the CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the Church welcomes global scrutiny, insisting that such attention may finally push authorities to take firm and decisive action.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking on Tuesday in Jos, Plateau State, during the opening of CAN’s Fourth Quarterly National Executive Council meeting, Okoh told Christian leaders from different parts of the country that the world is becoming increasingly disturbed by the scale and brutality of attacks targeting Christian populations, especially in the North and Middle Belt regions. He reaffirmed CAN’s long-held position, declaring that the pattern of violence amounts to what the body considers a Christian genocide in Nigeria.

The Archbishop recalled his recent visit to Bokkos in Plateau State, where he and other CAN officials met with displaced families who survived recent assaults. He described scenes of entire communities wiped out, homes reduced to rubble and thousands of lives permanently shattered, noting that such devastating realities have amplified global concern. He assured affected Christians that the Church stands firmly behind them, stressing that they are neither forgotten nor abandoned.

Okoh lamented that years of killings, kidnappings and the destruction of villages have gone unpunished, creating a climate of impunity that has drawn international attention. While expressing sadness that Nigeria is trending globally for such tragic reasons, he said the Church recognises the importance of any intervention that compels the Government to safeguard its citizens. He added that if international spotlight is what is needed to trigger decisive response from the authorities, then the Christian community fully embraces it.

The CAN President also reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to intensifying both local and international advocacy until Christian populations across the country receive the protection they deserve. He stressed that the Church will continue to demand justice, accountability and peace, while defending vulnerable citizens. Okoh further urged the Government to prioritise the immediate resettlement of internally displaced persons, warning that keeping people in camps indefinitely poses long-term risks to national stability. He maintained that no Nigerian should ever be targeted or harmed because of their faith.

Okoh also called on Christian leaders nationwide to remain united and resolute, noting that the world is closely watching how Nigeria responds to the ongoing crisis. He added that global awareness serves as a reminder that the suffering of persecuted Christian communities can no longer be overlooked.
