Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas, has suspended his planned defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that the recent abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State makes it inappropriate to proceed with any political celebration at this time. Governor Kefas explained that his decision was informed by the need to honour the victims and their families, stressing that moments of national insecurity require leaders to place humanity above political ambitions. He noted that his administration is committed to security, education, and the protection of vulnerable groups, making it “morally right and nationally responsible” to defer major political engagements until the crisis is addressed.

He emphasised that the welfare and safety of Nigerians must supersede any political agenda. Expressing solidarity with the affected families and the people of Kebbi State, he said his thoughts are also with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the nation confronts yet another painful reminder of its insecurity challenges.

Governor Kefas urged security agencies to intensify efforts toward rescuing the abducted schoolgirls, expressing confidence in their capacity to achieve results. He also appealed to Nigerians to remain calm, prayerful, and united during this difficult period. He added that a new date for his political movement would be announced after consultations and when the situation allows.

The governor was initially expected to officially join the APC on Wednesday after announcing his defection last week. Meanwhile, the attack on Maga Comprehensive Girls’ Secondary School in Sakaba Local Government Area of Kebbi State occurred early Monday, with terrorists storming the premises around 5:52 a.m. Twenty-five female students were abducted, and the school’s vice principal, Malam Hassan Yakubu Makuku, was killed during the assault.
