NCoS Denies Claims Of Neglect, Confirms Full Care For Female Inmates.
The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) FCT Command has refuted claims that female inmates under its supervision are being neglected or denied proper care. In a statement, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSC Sampson Duza, emphasized that the claim is “false, misleading, and does not reflect the reality on the ground.” He explained that NCoS provides sanitary pads and hygiene kits to all female inmates free of charge, with monthly distributions recorded in the inmates’ welfare registers.
Duza further highlighted that the Custodial Centres are equipped with healthcare units staffed by qualified doctors and nurses who address all medical needs, including menstrual-related issues. The facilities offer free consultations, medications, and referrals to nearby hospitals when necessary.
The Service also partners with civil society organizations, faith-based groups, and development partners who donate sanitary products and conduct menstrual-hygiene awareness programs. Recently, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) contributed a donation of sanitary pads to support these initiatives.
The FCT Command reaffirmed its commitment to the humane treatment and dignity of all inmates, ensuring that its practices align with the Nigerian Constitution, the Nelson Mandela Rules, and the United Nations Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.
