US Senator Ted Cruz Challenges Nigeria Over Sharia Policies And Islamist Violence.

Published

on

According to Nivo News, United States Senator Ted Cruz has accused the Nigerian Federal Government of using media campaigns to deflect accountability over policies he claims are driving the persecution of Christians in the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a statement shared on his X account on Friday, Cruz alleged that Nigerian authorities are aware their policies, including the enforcement of Sharia law and the tolerance of Islamist violence, have contributed to an environment in which Christians face persecution and violence.

“Instead of reversing these policies, they are waging a media campaign to escape exposure and accountability. I intend to prevent them from doing so,” Cruz stated.

The remarks follow a public exchange on social media between Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, and British broadcaster Piers Morgan regarding an unreleased interview. Earlier, Minister Onyeama had requested that the full and unedited version of his appearance on Piers Morgan Uncensored be aired, cautioning that selective editing could misrepresent Nigeria and reinforce misleading narratives about religious persecution.

On Wednesday, Onyeama reiterated on X that while his explanations might not align with certain preconceptions, they were supported by verifiable data. “I appeared on @piersmorgan’s flagship programme, @PiersUncensored, where I presented a factual and contextual perspective on the misleading narratives and allegations of religious persecution in Nigeria,” he stated.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to stop targeting social media activists. Obi’s remarks, issued through the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), were a direct response to the EFCC’s recent summoning of activists known as “Randy Peter” and “Mama Pee”.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Focus on High-Profile Crimes: POMR spokesperson Idris Zekeri emphasized that the EFCC is a vital institution that should dedicate its limited resources to addressing major financial crimes, such as public fund diversion and significant financial mismanagement, which hinder Nigeria’s economic growth and infrastructure development.

  • Concerns Over Resource Allocation: While acknowledging that the rule of law applies to everyone, the group questioned if prioritizing online disputes and minor, debatable infractions is the most effective use of the EFCC’s mandate.

  • Preserving Public Trust: The statement warned that by focusing heavily on online critics and activists, the agency risks being viewed as a tool to suppress political dissent. This perception threatens to erode public confidence and trust in the agency’s primary mission to combat corruption.

  • Call for Impartiality: POMR urged the EFCC leadership to avoid entanglement in social or political disputes, maintaining that the commission’s core responsibility must remain the combatting of systemic corruption and serious economic crimes.
