Omowunmi Cynthia, widow of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, has refused to comply with a family directive to stop using the Aloba surname.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The dispute emerged after the Aloba family, led by the family head Omolayo Aloba and Mohbad’s father Joseph Aloba, issued a statement in Lagos on November 13, 2025. The family instructed Omowunmi to refrain from using the surname until a court-ordered DNA test confirmed the paternity of her son, Liam.

The family further asserted that no traditional or statutory marriage existed between Omowunmi and the late singer, citing the absence of full Yoruba marriage rites. They also appointed three administrators to manage Mohbad’s estate and indicated that recognition of both mother and child would be contingent on the DNA test results.

In response, Omowunmi took to Instagram on the same day, reattaching the Aloba surname to her profile and signaling her intention to continue using it. She highlighted her son in the post and encouraged followers to support her small business, writing: “Please patronize Wunmi Aloba oo, Liam Aloba needs to be taken care of.”

Omowunmi’s lawyer, Kabir Akingbolu, condemned the family’s directive, stating that the law protects her right to use the surname, which was given to her by her late husband. He referenced a previous Supreme Court ruling affirming that lawful holders of a name are entitled to retain it. He also clarified that Omowunmi has never avoided the DNA test and remains ready to comply at any time.
