SWDC Boss Urges Strategic Business-Policy Partnerships To Transform Nigeria.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the South West Development Commission (SWDC), Dr. Charles Akinola, has urged a deliberate partnership between business leaders and policy makers to drive Nigeria’s transformation. He made the call during his keynote address at the inaugural annual lecture of the Alumni Association of the University of Ibadan School of Business, themed “The Power of Collaboration: Alumni as a Catalyst for Business Growth and Societal Transformation, and Building Legacies.”....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Other notable speakers at the event included the immediate past Managing Director of First Bank PLC, Dr. Adesola Adeduntan, Dr. Adebola Akindele, and Mr. Godwin Odah.

Highlighting the complementary roles of business and policy, Akinola stated, “Business provides energy, innovation, and risk appetite; policy provides stability, scale, and systems. Imagine a partnership where alumni of business and policy schools work together—one designing sustainable business models, the other shaping regulatory frameworks that allow those models to thrive.”

He cited international examples, noting that such collaboration has underpinned the competitiveness of Singapore, Rwanda’s governance transformation, and the Nordic nations’ wealth creation. Akinola stressed that Nigeria can replicate this model through intentional partnerships among business and policy alumni networks, describing the alumni community as “the perfect incubator for such collaboration.”

Akinola emphasized the strategic link between knowledge, network, and talent in societal transformation, explaining that knowledge provides depth, networks extend influence, and talent converts insight into action. “When combined, collaboration becomes catalytic. It turns a classroom relationship into a lifelong partnership and an alumni body into an economic powerhouse,” he said.

The SWDC chief further highlighted the commission’s initiatives under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, including the One Economic Bloc Strategy, which aims to integrate the economies of the six South West states into a single competitive region. He noted that partnerships with universities, the private sector, and the diaspora are central to creating innovation hubs, industrial corridors, and attracting both capital and expertise.

“This is collaborative federalism through partnership, not competition. Government, business, academia, and communities must co-create a better future. Alumni networks can mirror this approach, functioning as ecosystems rather than mere associations,” he said.

Dr. Adeduntan also highlighted the importance of collaboration over individual efforts, noting that global growth today is driven by networks rather than individuals. He described alumni associations as reservoirs of expertise, relationships, and influence, and observed that they are increasingly shifting from social events to economic activities that promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and prosperity.

Prof. Olugbenga Mokunolu, president of the alumni association, welcomed participants and reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting the University of Ibadan School of Business, mentoring future leaders, and helping alumni navigate the professional landscape successfully.

Jiti Ogunye, the legal consultant to Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, has pushed back against calls for his principal to resign over the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) scandal, arguing such demands are unjustified.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Minimal Interaction: Ogunye asserts that Gbajabiamila’s office had the least official engagement with the “fake DG” of the PFIPC, Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, when compared to other high-ranking government officials.

  • Wider Accountability: He contends that if Gbajabiamila were to resign due to this controversy, several other officials with more documented, direct interactions with Adeyemi would also be required to vacate their positions.

  • Specific Officials Named: Ogunye explicitly identified the Director-General of the Budget Office, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), and the Accountant-General of the Federation as officials whose offices had deeper dealings with the individual in question.

  • Unfortunate Fixation: The legal consultant characterized the public focus on Gbajabiamila as “unfortunate,” noting that those who processed requests and generated correspondence for Adeyemi are in a better position to address the scandal’s questions.

  • Questioning the Logic: He challenged the rationale for targeting the Chief of Staff, questioning whether the public expects all identified officials involved in the “paper trail” to leave office simultaneously.
