Obaseki Denies Defrauding Oba Of Benin, Clarifies Role In MOWAA Project.
The immediate past governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has refuted allegations that he defrauded the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, concerning the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) project.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a recent interview, Obaseki clarified that he was neither a trustee of MOWAA nor involved in any fundraising activities on its behalf. He emphasized that his role as governor was to support cultural initiatives, not to personally manage or fund them.
Obaseki explained that the Benin Royal Museum was part of a broader plan to establish a cultural district in Edo State, which would also incorporate the MOWAA Institute. He proposed forming a Trust that would include the Benin Palace, the federal government, and the state government to ensure coordinated oversight of the project.
He added that the Edo State government’s role was to create an enabling environment for cultural development, providing support, land, and collaboration rather than directly funding museum construction. Obaseki noted that MOWAA has raised over €80 million independently, far beyond what the state could contribute.
Addressing the controversy with the Benin Monarch, Obaseki said that while there was initial collaboration, disagreements arose during international engagements, prompting the Palace to withdraw from the Trust. He reaffirmed that the government continues to support the Oba’s plans for a Royal Museum and any initiatives that enhance Edo State’s status as a cultural hub.
Obaseki concluded that MOWAA, like other investment projects in the state, is not his personal property, but supporting such initiatives is essential for attracting investment and growing Edo State’s economy.

Hands Off Our Police! Senate Leader Issues Explosive Warning To Shield State Force From Governors And Cabals!.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has emphasized that any proposed state police services must possess guaranteed financial independence to protect them from potential manipulation by governors, political actors, criminal elements, and other powerful interests. Key aspects of Bamidele’s proposal and the National Assembly’s approach include:
-
Addressing Stakeholder Concerns: Bamidele acknowledged that fears regarding the potential abuse of state police by influential individuals are legitimate and well-founded, noting that these concerns are partially rooted in Nigeria’s experience with regional police control during the First Republic.
-
Multi-layered Safeguards: The National Assembly is working to develop a system of checks and safeguards designed to ensure professional discipline, institutional independence, and financial autonomy.
-
Judiciary-Style Funding: To prevent police chiefs from being subject to the “whims and caprices” of state governors, Bamidele suggested a funding model similar to that of the judiciary, which is protected under the Constitution and does not require routine executive approval.
-
Constitutional Guarantees: Bamidele stated that the 1999 Constitution should provide guaranteed funding sources for both State Commissioners of Police and State Police Service Commissions.
-
Continued Engagement: The National Assembly intends to maintain stakeholder engagement throughout the constitutional amendment process required to establish state police services across the country.
