Assemblies Of God Leadership Condemns Thuggery As Pastors Clash Over Church Assets.

Published

on

A serious dispute has erupted within the Assemblies of God Church Nigeria as two pastors clashed over control of a valuable church property at 35 Nanka Street, New Haven, Enugu. The conflict involves Rev. Okechukwu Obioha, who has managed the property since 2021, and Rev. Isaac Nnaji, recently assigned to the New Haven District headquarters.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The disagreement centers on who holds legitimate authority to administer the multi-million-naira asset. Rev. Nnaji claims that his new appointment grants him control over the property, while Rev. Obioha insists he remains the lawful custodian based on a Power of Attorney issued by the church’s Incorporated Trustees in August 2021. The document authorized Obioha to “take possession, administer, manage and superintend” the property, including the collection of rents and enforcement of tenancy agreements.

Trouble flared on October 30, 2025, when Obioha went to collect rent from a tenant and alleged he was ambushed by men under Nnaji’s direction. Obioha claimed the group attempted to assault him in public, causing a traffic jam as bystanders intervened. The attackers reportedly warned him: “If they ever see me again on the property, it will only be my dead body that will be seen.”

Obioha has filed a petition with the Commissioner of Police, describing the incident as a “threat to life and malicious damage” and urging law enforcement to intervene to prevent further violence. The Enugu State Police Command has launched an investigation, with Obioha interviewed on Monday and Nnaji summoned for questioning on Tuesday.

Rev. Nnaji declined to comment, stating, “The case is before the police. I will not talk about it now.” Meanwhile, Rev. Godwin Amaowoh, the General Secretary of the Assemblies of God Church, asserted that Nnaji has no authority over the property. He accused Nnaji of using intimidation tactics and described the incident as part of ongoing attempts by “unscrupulous elements” to destabilize the church. Amaowoh emphasized that the property remains under the legal representation of Rev. Obioha and pledged that the church leadership would reclaim assets allegedly withheld during previous internal disputes.

CAN explained that the document causing the confusion was issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), adding that it never approved or circulated any communication involving the Sultan in the chapel project.

It said the clarification became necessary to correct the public impression and prevent misinformation linking it to the claim.
