In a significant move to strengthen regional maritime security, the Nigerian Navy on Tuesday officially handed over the refurbished Benin Navy Ship (BNS) Matelot Brice Kpomasse to the Republic of Benin Navy. The handover ceremony highlighted the growing partnership between the Nigerian and Beninese navies, focused on enhancing naval capacity and fostering South–South cooperation in the Gulf of Guinea.

Rear Admiral Ibrahim Shehu, Admiral Superintendent of Naval Dockyard Limited, stated that the refit is part of an agreement to overhaul six Benin Navy ships in two phases. He noted that BNS Matelot Brice Kpomasse is the third vessel completed under the first phase, following the successful refit of BNS Pendjari and BNS Couffo.

“The docking and refurbishment of Benin Republic Navy ships at our Naval Dockyard represents a milestone in regional maritime security and military cooperation,” the Admiral said. “It also underscores the Dockyard’s emerging role as a strategic force multiplier within Nigeria’s maritime sector.”

The refit involved comprehensive technical work, including cropping and replating of hull sections, reconstruction of deck fittings and vents, overhaul of engines, gearboxes, and generators, and refurbishment of steering and propulsion systems. These efforts restored the vessel to full operational capability, enabling it to carry out maritime security duties in Benin’s territorial waters.

Rear Admiral Shehu expressed gratitude to Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, Chief of the Naval Staff, for his visionary leadership and support, while praising the Beninese Navy for trusting the Dockyard’s technical expertise.

Representing the Chief of Naval Staff of the Benin Republic, Captain Mohamed Idrissou, Director of Military Organisation and Personnel, described the handover as a symbol of the strong partnership between both nations and a model of effective South-South cooperation. He commended the professionalism and dedication of the Nigerian Navy throughout the 20-month refit.

“This event demonstrates our shared determination to combine technical and operational capabilities to address regional security challenges,” Idrissou said. “It complements our joint efforts under the Yaoundé Architecture and other regional security frameworks.”

He further urged the ship’s crew to maintain discipline, professionalism, and patriotism as they resume duty on the modernized vessel.

The BNS Matelot Brice Kpomasse, a deep-sea patrol ship designed for surveillance, anti-piracy, and coastal defense, reflects the growing technical capacity of the Nigerian Naval Dockyard. Officials from both countries reaffirmed their commitment to deepen collaboration in ship maintenance, intelligence sharing, and joint naval exercises to secure the Gulf of Guinea.

“Today’s handover is more than a vessel—it is a testament to trust, partnership, and our shared commitment to safer African waters,” Idrissou added.

The procession included four buses, one of which carried the Arsenal Women’s team, winners of the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup this past February.

This celebration followed a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday, where Arsenal ultimately fell in a penalty shootout after misses by Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes. Despite the European defeat, the Premier League title held immense significance for the team, coming after three consecutive seasons as runners-up.
