President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on Nigerian editors to uphold truth, fairness, and national unity in their reporting, emphasizing the critical role of the media in sustaining democracy. Describing journalism as “an instrument of national awakening,” the President highlighted the sacrifices of journalists who risked their lives under colonial rule and military regimes, noting that their efforts form a foundation for the country’s current democratic framework. He stressed that freedom requires constant vigilance and responsible exercise, reminding editors that democracy thrives not just through laws and elections, but through the integrity of public discourse.

“Editors and managers of the national information space shape narratives, influence public understanding, and determine national focus. This responsibility must be exercised with wisdom, fairness, and a strong sense of national duty,” Tinubu said. He cautioned against cynicism that breeds mistrust and despair, urging journalists to ensure that public debate remains constructive and focused on nation-building.

Addressing the challenge of misinformation in the digital age, Tinubu warned that “falsehood can take root before truth has time to speak,” calling on editors to act as gatekeepers of verified information. He encouraged the media to report boldly but truthfully, and to critique government policies with knowledge, fairness, and a commitment to building society rather than undermining it.

On governance, the President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to stabilizing the economy and improving citizens’ welfare. He noted that reforms have been challenging but are aimed at strengthening the economy, restoring macroeconomic balance, encouraging investment, and rebuilding confidence across sectors. Tinubu acknowledged that more work remains to ensure that economic growth translates into tangible improvements in the lives of Nigerians.

He emphasized that nation-building is a shared responsibility among government, private sector, civil society, and the media. Urging editors to uphold the ethics of their profession, he stated, “Let us choose clarity over confusion, responsibility over recklessness, and hope over despair.”
