MAN Warns NAFDAC: Ban On Sachet Alcohol Could Cripple Nigeria’s Economy.
The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has urged the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to reconsider its directive banning the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small PET bottles, set to take effect by December 31, 2025.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to MAN Director-General Segun Ajayi-Kadir, the move contradicts agreements reached during the validation of the National Alcohol Policy in October 2025, which included NAFDAC among other stakeholders. He stated that the Senate’s resolution on the ban, passed on November 6, lacked proper consultation and public hearings with key industry players, unlike the process followed by the House of Representatives.
Ajayi-Kadir emphasized that the validated policy advocates for multi-sectoral action plans, stricter enforcement, licensed liquor outlets, enhanced regulatory monitoring, and nationwide awareness campaigns on responsible alcohol consumption, rather than a blanket prohibition. He also dismissed claims linking sachet alcohol to underage drinking, noting that government-commissioned studies found no supporting evidence, and highlighted the industry’s investment of over ₦1 billion in public education initiatives targeting minors.
Warning of significant economic consequences, Ajayi-Kadir said enforcing the ban could threaten ₦1.9 trillion in investments, over 500,000 direct jobs, and roughly five million indirect positions in marketing, logistics, and supply chains. He further argued that sachet packaging provides low-income adults with affordable, regulated alcohol in manageable quantities, potentially reducing excessive consumption.
The MAN chief cautioned that the ban may drive consumers toward unregulated, illicit alcohol and imported smuggled brands, increasing health risks, harming local manufacturers, and reducing government tax revenue. MAN has therefore called on the Senate to withdraw the directive and support the implementation of the National Alcohol Policy, stressing that regulation and public education, rather than outright prohibition, offer the most sustainable approach.
“MAN supports measures that remove unsafe products from the market,” Ajayi-Kadir stated. “However, such decisions must be evidence-based. Abrupt regulatory shifts risk jobs, livelihoods, and national economic stability.” He reaffirmed the association’s commitment to safety compliance and responsible alcohol consumption nationwide.

Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, has rejected assertions that he is breaching a zoning agreement that would supposedly limit Ebonyi North senators to one term. Speaking to the press in Abakaliki on Sunday, the Senator pointed to the precedent set by former Governor Sam Egwu, who successfully served two terms in the Senate, to argue that the alleged one-term policy lacks binding authority. Highlighting his own constituency initiatives and record, Nwebonyi stated he faces no serious competition for his seat and emphasized that public service should be defined by sacrifice rather than personal gain.
Additionally, the Senator expressed strong support for the APC’s prospects in Ebonyi State and lauded President Bola Tinubu for prioritizing infrastructure development in the South-East. He further praised Governor Francis Nwifuru as a unifying leader, dismissing rumors of friction within the Izzi clan and calling on stakeholders to prioritize the state’s collective development over divisive politics.

The festivities, which began after 2 p.m. at the Emirates Stadium, wound through Highbury, Canonbury, and Upper Street before concluding back at the stadium. This parade honored a league victory confirmed on May 19, ending a 22-year championship drought. During the event, fans were seen climbing trees and rooftops to see Mikel Arteta’s squad as the players showcased the Premier League trophy. The procession included four buses, one of which carried the Arsenal Women’s team, winners of the inaugural Women’s Champions Cup this past February.
This celebration followed a heartbreaking 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Budapest on Saturday, where Arsenal ultimately fell in a penalty shootout after misses by Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes. Despite the European defeat, the Premier League title held immense significance for the team, coming after three consecutive seasons as runners-up. Reflecting on the massive turnout, journalist Matt Graveling described the celebration as the largest sporting event he had witnessed in his 15-year career.
