Troost-Ekong Declares Super Eagles Ready To Face Aubameyang’s Gabon In High-Stakes Playoff
According to Nivo News, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has stressed that Nigeria cannot afford any mistakes as they prepare for the crucial CAF playoff against Gabon in Morocco, with qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup being a non-negotiable target for him, his teammates, and the nation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The 32-year-old Al-Kholood defender, who has earned 80 caps since his debut in 2015, remains one of the most experienced members of the squad, having represented Nigeria at both the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games. Reflecting on his career, Troost-Ekong said, “Playing at the World Cup for the second time would be a dream. In 2018, I achieved my childhood dream at 23. Now, with more experience, I’m ready to lead this generation beyond previous accomplishments.”
Troost-Ekong acknowledged Nigeria’s challenging qualifying campaign but highlighted the squad’s resilience. “We were disappointed not to qualify directly. The first five rounds were tough, and we had to play catch-up. Reaching the playoffs is still a significant achievement. The challenges of the past few years have strengthened us, and we are well-prepared for what lies ahead,” he said.
The Eagles open their playoff journey on Thursday, November 13, against a formidable Gabon side led by veteran striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Troost-Ekong emphasized the threat posed by the opposition, noting, “Gabon is a strong team. I’ve faced Aubameyang in Saudi Arabia and know his capabilities. In Africa, no team can be underestimated, and we certainly won’t take any side lightly.”
Should Nigeria advance, they will meet either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 16 for a chance to reach the Intercontinental Playoffs in March 2026. Troost-Ekong highlighted the importance of focus and unity, saying, “We’ve built great chemistry, and the mindset in camp is positive. It’s a one-off game on neutral ground, and we know we must win to reach the final playoff. There’s no room for error.”
Named Player of the Tournament at the last Africa Cup of Nations, Troost-Ekong acknowledged the pressure of representing a nation of 200 million, adding, “Playing for Nigeria comes with immense pressure, but it’s an honour to represent such a passionate football nation. We aim to channel that energy positively and give our best.”
