The event, themed “Teaching Entrepreneurship with a Focus on Teachers,” brought together key stakeholders from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC), the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), state ministries of education, and representatives from the private sector. The convening aimed to deepen discussions on how educators can foster creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking among students nationwide.

Delivering the keynote on behalf of the Executive Secretary of NERDC, Dr. Salisu Shehu, the Council’s Director of Educational Research, Dr. Olakunle Akinsola, described teachers as vital catalysts in shaping a new generation of job creators and innovators. He emphasized that empowering teachers is central to transforming the education system and equipping students with the problem-solving and resilience skills needed for the future workforce.

Dr. Shehu further noted, “When we empower teachers, we empower an entire generation. There is an urgency for educators to focus on empowering our teachers.”

A plenary session titled “Teachers as Catalysts for Entrepreneurship Education” featured in-depth discussions on the critical role of teachers in driving innovation from within schools. Participants highlighted that teachers are often the first innovators students encounter, consistently adapting lessons, generating ideas, and inspiring curiosity despite limited resources.

Through its SET4LYF (School-to-Work Educational Transition for Long-Term Youth Fulfilment) initiative, JAN continues to provide educators with the frameworks and skills needed to connect classroom learning with real-world opportunities.

As an outcome of the convening, JAN announced plans to release a communiqué developed by a Technical Working Group. The document will outline actionable strategies for integrating entrepreneurship education into Nigeria’s national curriculum and promoting stronger collaboration between education and industry sectors.

JAN also reiterated its commitment to partnerships with institutions and individuals seeking to advance entrepreneurship education nationwide, emphasizing that sustainable transformation in education relies on empowering teachers to lead innovation.
