Police Retirees Sound Alarm On Pension Neglect Amid Rising Security Challenges.
Retired police officers under the Police Retired Officers’ Forum (PROF) have raised concerns over delays and inadequacies in the payment of police pensions and gratuities. PROF called on the Senate to introduce and pass the Police Amendment Bill 2025 to align with the version approved by the House of Representatives in October. Chief Superintendent of Police Raphael Irowainu (rtd), National Coordinator of PROF, highlighted that although the 9th National Assembly passed the bill, former President Muhammadu Buhari did not sign it into law. He further lamented that the Senate has yet to act on the bill despite repeated appeals.
Irowainu emphasized that resolving police welfare is critical to national security, stressing that the police are the primary agency for internal security. He condemned what he described as the government’s neglect of officers who die in the line of duty, contrasting Nigeria’s treatment of fallen officers with that of other countries.
Recalling the 2013 Nasarawa State incident, he noted that while DSS families were compensated with N10 million and a house each after losing personnel in the line of duty, police families received only N2.5 million, and even that was difficult to obtain. He described police pensions as “grossly inadequate,” citing examples of monthly pension payments ranging from N24,000 for Assistant Superintendents to N75,000 for retired Commissioners of Police, far below military retirees’ benefits.
Irowainu warned that the continued neglect of retired officers poses a significant threat to national security, as it could drive some into crime or lead to the withholding of critical intelligence. He criticized the Police Management Team for abandoning the contributory pension scheme while top officers, from AIG to IGP, are no longer part of PENCOM.
He urged the government to act decisively to ensure justice, fairness, and dignity for officers who dedicated their lives to protecting Nigeria.
