“Wipe Our Tears”: Ogoni Leader Begs Tinubu To Heal Decades of Pain In Niger Delta
A former United Nations delegate of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), John Idamkue, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to bring lasting relief to the long-suffering people of Ogoniland in Rivers State.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, Idamkue, who served as a close aide to the late environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa, made the plea in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday. He expressed deep concern that the Ogoni ethnic group had been neglected by successive Nigerian governments, despite decades of struggle for environmental and social justice championed by Saro-Wiwa.
Idamkue called on President Tinubu to “wipe away the tears” of the Ogoni people by addressing the injustices and human rights violations they have endured for over three decades. He stressed that the President’s Ogoni Dialogue Committee should take concrete steps toward healing the wounds inflicted by years of military repression.
He urged the Federal Government to implement comprehensive measures to mitigate the trauma suffered by Ogoni victims, including psychological counselling, reconstruction of destroyed homes and villages, compensation for lost livelihoods, and cleanup of polluted areas.
Recalling the tragic history of the Ogoni struggle, Idamkue noted that apart from the well-known executions of the “Ogoni 4” and “Ogoni 9,” more than 4,000 indigenes lost their lives during violent crackdowns, yet no one has been held accountable for the atrocities. He cited incidents such as military raids on Ogoni communities, killings of traders, and widespread destruction of villages in the Baan-Ogoni area by the Internal Security Task Force.
He lamented that the Ogoni crisis not only exposed grave environmental injustices but also played a key role in galvanizing the pro-democracy movement that resisted the dictatorship of late General Sani Abacha.
Idamkue emphasized that several major development and reform initiatives in the Niger Delta—such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), the 13% oil derivation formula, the UNEP Report, and the Petroleum Industry Act 2021—were direct results of the struggles and sacrifices of the Ogoni people.
He further reminded authorities that international and local reports, including those by the United Nations, Justice Oputa Panel, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, and others, have documented the suffering and environmental degradation endured by the Ogoni people. He maintained that true reconciliation and justice must begin with accountability and restoration.
