IMF Lauds Nigeria’s Reform Progress As Plans for $1 Trillion Economy Take Shape.
Abuja recently hosted a high-level engagement between the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Federal Government to discuss Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms, medium-term outlook, and preparations for the 2026–2030 National Development Plan. The meeting brought together the IMF delegation, led by Mr. Axel Schimmelpfennig, Assistant Director of the IMF’s African Department, and Nigeria’s Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Bagudu.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the discussions were part of the IMF’s consultative mission to review the country’s fiscal priorities, macroeconomic framework, and reform direction ahead of its next country report. Schimmelpfennig acknowledged the progress Nigeria has made on reforms and emphasized the IMF’s interest in understanding how the nation’s medium-term strategy aligns with its development objectives.
“We would like to hear your thoughts on current developments — your outlook for the next year and the medium term,” Schimmelpfennig said. He added that Nigeria’s approach to pre-election periods demonstrates policy coherence and institutional maturity, noting the country’s continued commitment to reform despite potential political uncertainty.
Responding, Minister Bagudu reiterated the government’s dedication to aligning fiscal reforms with national planning to ensure efficiency, inclusiveness, and sustainable growth. He praised the IMF’s technical support over the past two and a half years, stating that its guidance has been instrumental in shaping evidence-based reforms.
Bagudu highlighted that the administration’s reform efforts, guided by principles of discipline, inclusion, and transparency, are beginning to yield measurable results. He outlined the government’s ambition to build a $1 trillion economy by 2030, emphasizing that the Renewed Hope Ward-Based Development Plan aims to leverage the economic potential of Nigeria’s 8,809 wards for inclusive, bottom-up growth.
The minister further elaborated on the development of the 2026–2030 National Development Plan, designed to integrate federal, state, and local strategies into a cohesive, data-driven roadmap for sustainable development. “We are working to make the plan a reflection of Nigeria’s collective ambition — one that incorporates fiscal discipline, subnational collaboration, and the reforms necessary to sustain long-term growth,” Bagudu said.
He also underscored the value of ongoing collaboration with the IMF in macroeconomic modeling, fiscal planning, and comparative data analysis to enhance policy outcomes, adding, “Our partnership with the IMF is about innovation, not dependency, and will continue to guide Nigeria’s reform-driven path towards sustainable growth.”
