Historic Move: Otti Increases Abia Corps Members’ Pay From ₦4,000 To ₦50,000.
According to Nivo News, Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has approved a remarkable upward review of the monthly stipends paid to National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state. The allowance, previously pegged at ₦4,000, has now been raised to as high as ₦50,000 per month, marking the first significant adjustment in nearly three decades.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Njoku Ukoha, who described the increase as part of the administration’s ongoing commitment to youth empowerment and public sector reform.
Under the new payment structure, all corps members serving in Abia will now receive a base monthly allowance of ₦20,000. In addition, those posted to state government establishments will receive an extra ₦10,000, while those serving in teaching and medical roles will earn an additional ₦30,000, bringing their total allowance to ₦50,000 monthly.
Ukoha stated that the decision complements the Federal Government’s new ₦77,000 monthly NYSC allowance and was designed to attract and retain young professionals in critical sectors like education and healthcare. He explained that the initiative reflects Governor Otti’s vision to address long-standing capacity gaps and promote workforce development in Abia.
He further noted that the state government has continued to support corps members through several interventions at the NYSC Orientation Camp in Bende Local Government Area, including hostel renovations, internal road improvements, and upgraded power and water facilities.
“The governor believes every institution or infrastructure within Abia—whether federal or state-owned—deserves proper attention, because it is the people of Abia who benefit most,” Ukoha stated.
The CPS also highlighted that the state recently implemented the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers and extended it to local government staff, aligning their earnings with federal standards. He added that about 35 percent of the state’s budget is currently dedicated to health and education, sectors described as “pillars of human capital development.”
According to the statement, the increment aims to make national service more fulfilling while encouraging corps members to play active roles in the state’s development. “Governor Otti’s decision sends a clear message that Abia is serious about empowering its youth, rewarding diligence, and building a future where service is truly valued,” Ukoha added.
With this increase, Abia now ranks among the top states in Nigeria offering the highest stipends to corps members. This development comes shortly after Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, also reviewed corps members’ allowances upward from ₦20,000 to ₦30,000, underscoring the growing commitment among state governments to enhance the welfare of NYSC participants.
