Kaduna Breaks Tradition, Offers Bandits A Second Chance Through Education And Care
According to Nivo News, the Kaduna State Government has unveiled a new peace-building strategy that provides bandits with access to education, healthcare, and livelihood opportunities as part of efforts to end years of insecurity in the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The state’s Commissioner for Information, Malam Ahmed Maiyaki, made the disclosure during a one-day workshop on Peace Journalism organised by the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in collaboration with the Global Peace Foundation Nigeria and the Kaduna Ministry of Information.
Maiyaki explained that the initiative, known as the Kaduna Peace Model, marks a radical shift from the traditional military approach to insecurity, opting instead for dialogue, community rebuilding, and human development. He stressed that the government rejected ransom payments or financial settlements, focusing instead on trust-building and community revival.
“You cannot bomb peace into existence; you must build it with trust,” Maiyaki said, noting that the turning point came when leaders of armed groups requested the reopening of rural markets, schools, and health centres previously shut down due to attacks.
He emphasised that the decision to reopen these facilities was not a reward for criminality but a response to basic human needs. “We didn’t give them a dime. What we gave was life back to communities,” he stated.
Highlighting the grim security record of Kaduna State, Maiyaki revealed that between 2015 and 2023, the state experienced 1,160 security incidents, 4,876 deaths, and thousands of kidnappings and displacements, leading to the closure of 142 schools and 192 health centres. In 2021 alone, 1,192 people were killed and 3,348 abducted, pushing several communities into fear and silence.
He added that Kaduna, once tagged a “red zone” by the international community, is gradually reclaiming its image through intelligence-sharing, dialogue, and socio-economic reintegration under the ONSA–Kaduna Peace Committee, a partnership between the state and the Office of the National Security Adviser.
Maiyaki said the collaboration has so far resulted in the peaceful release of over 500 captives without ransom payments or force. “We are seeing trust where there was fear, and cooperation where there was hostility,” he remarked.
Expressing optimism about the future, the commissioner maintained that the government’s peace initiative aims to restore humanity and rebuild abandoned communities, not to reward criminal acts. He also urged journalists to embrace peace-sensitive reporting to foster reconciliation and stability across Kaduna communities.
