Obaseki Fires Back: ‘I Didn’t Leave N600bn Debt For Edo State’.
Former Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has dismissed claims that his administration left behind a debt burden of N600 billion for the state.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The former governor made this known through his Media Adviser, Crusoe Osagie, in reaction to allegations made by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Kassim Afegbua.
According to Nivo News, Afegbua had alleged that Obaseki’s administration left massive debts and raised concerns over some legacy projects, including the Radisson Hotel and the Museum for West African Arts (MOWAA).
Obaseki, however, described the allegations as baseless, insisting that the current government led by Governor Monday Okpebholo should verify the state’s debt status with the Debt Management Office (DMO). He maintained that no government—whether at the federal, state, or local level—can take loans or incur debts without DMO approval.
The former governor expressed disappointment over what he termed as misinformation being spread by the current administration, warning that such reckless statements could tarnish the image of the country before the international community.
He explained that all records regarding the Radisson Hotel project were duly captured in the official transition report handed to the new administration.
On the issue of MOWAA, Obaseki clarified that the project is an international partnership supported by the German, French, and British governments, and was developed on properly ceded land. He stated that such global investments undergo due diligence and would not be associated with any illegality.
Obaseki further cautioned that irresponsible public statements from officials could portray Edo State as being governed by individuals who lack an understanding of governance. He challenged Afegbua and others making the N600 billion debt claim to produce evidence from the DMO, stressing that there is no record of such debt in the agency’s database.
He concluded by condemning what he described as deliberate attempts to mislead the public, saying such acts project Nigeria as a “failed state” in the eyes of the international community.
