According to Nivo News, the regional bloc made this clarification in what appeared to be a direct response to recent remarks by United States President Donald Trump, who had alleged a “Christian genocide” in Nigeria and threatened possible military intervention.

In a statement released on Monday, the ECOWAS Commission emphasized that acts of terrorism in the region are not driven by religion or ethnicity but by efforts to destabilize communities and undermine peace. The commission explained that extremist violence has affected Muslims, Christians, and followers of other faiths alike, adding that independent reports over the years have shown that such attacks do not discriminate on the basis of religion, gender, or age.

ECOWAS expressed deep concern over attempts to misrepresent the realities of insecurity in the region, warning that such narratives could inflame tensions and derail peace-building initiatives.

The body firmly rejected what it described as “false and dangerous” claims of religious genocide, stressing that terrorism in West Africa aims to destabilize states rather than exterminate any particular religious group.
