US Breaks Silence On Wole Soyinka’s Visa Revocation, Says ‘It’s Not A Right!’

According to Nivo News, the 91-year-old literary icon recently revealed during a media parley in Lagos that his B1/B2 visa had been withdrawn by the U.S. authorities. Speaking at Kongi’s Harvest, Freedom Park, Soyinka disclosed that he currently has no valid U.S. visa and should not be expected in the country.
Reacting to the development, the U.S. Consulate explained that the issuance or withdrawal of visas is a discretionary act of the government and not an entitlement. The clarification came on Thursday following media inquiries regarding Soyinka’s situation.
In a statement issued by Julia McKay, the Public Diplomacy Officer of the U.S. Department of State, the Consulate reaffirmed that details concerning visa cases remain confidential under U.S. law. McKay stressed that “visas are a privilege, not a right,” adding that any visa can be revoked at any time if circumstances warrant such action.
She further noted that every nation reserves the authority to determine who may or may not enter its borders, reinforcing the U.S. government’s stance on the discretionary nature of visa issuance and revocation.
