At the top of the list is Paul Biya of Cameroon, aged 92. Born on February 13, 1933, Biya has been in power since November 6, 1982, making him not only the oldest serving president globally but also the longest-ruling non-royal national leader. Jean-Lucien Savi de Tové of Togo, 86, assumed the presidency on May 3, 2025, becoming the oldest individual to take office in his country.
Alassane Ouattara of Ivory Coast, 83, has led his country since 2010, navigating periods of political instability and economic recovery. Equally aged is Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, who has held the presidency since 1979, making him Africa’s longest-serving head of state. Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe, 82, has been president since 2017, facing significant economic and human rights challenges.
Other veteran leaders include Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, 81, in power since 1986; Denis Sassou Nguesso of the Republic of Congo, 81, serving since 1979 with brief interruptions; and Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria, 79, who assumed office in 2019 amid calls for democratic reforms. Ismail Omar Guelleh of Djibouti, 77, has led his nation since 1999, while Bola Tinubu of Nigeria, 73, became the country’s 16th president in 2023, known for his strategic coalition-building and political influence.
