Wait Until Dawn revives the essence of traditional African drama, presenting theatre as both a reflection of societal moral crises and a call for ethical rejuvenation. Lambert, renowned for blending ideology with artistry, leverages literature and performance to advocate for Africa’s moral, spiritual, and economic awakening.
Set in the fictional precolonial kingdom of Ameke, the narrative chronicles royal betrayal, murder, and divine justice. The story begins with the assassination of King Eze Kalu Ibi, an event that sparks suspicion and political turmoil within his council of elders. At the center of the intrigue is Akaike, a scheming elder whose machinations lead to the tragic demise of Dike Ugwuala, a rival falsely accused of regicide. Dike’s ensuing suicide underscores the destructive consequences of deceit and moral decay.
“The house is now on fire. There is no hiding place for the rat anymore,” Akaike declares in one of the play’s most chilling moments, reflecting the corruption and tension that drive the drama.
As chaos envelops Ameke, women emerge as moral and spiritual anchors. Ogonna, the widowed queen, appeals to ancestral spirits for guidance, while Ugonma, Akaike’s wife, becomes the voice of conscience, confronting her husband in a climactic revelation: “Akaike! Akaike! So, you killed my father?” Her courage restores the kingdom’s moral order, affirming the enduring African belief that truth, like dawn, can never remain hidden.
Rich with proverbs, chants, and symbolic motifs, Wait Until Dawn evokes the rhythm and depth of African oral tradition. Critics have compared Lambert’s work to iconic productions such as Ola Rotimi’s The Gods Are Not to Blame and Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman, while noting Lambert’s unique lyrical and philosophically charged storytelling.
Each act builds toward a metaphorical dawn, signaling the inevitable triumph of truth over deception. Lambert describes the play not merely as art but as a cultural statement and moral call to Africa: “The gods may wait, the people may suffer, but justice never sleeps,” he affirms.
