Reflecting on their long-standing friendship, the President recalled meeting Ibrahim in the Senate chambers in 1992 during the aborted Third Republic, when Tinubu represented Lagos West under the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Ibrahim represented Katsina South under the National Republican Convention (NRC). He described their political partnership, rooted in shared ideals of justice, good governance, and democratic advancement, as transcending party lines.
Tinubu commended Ibrahim’s courage during the struggle for democracy, particularly following the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election. He recounted that Ibrahim stood firm alongside colleagues in defying military authorities, even remaining in detention until all were released together.
The President also highlighted Ibrahim’s re-elections to the Senate in 2003 and 2011, emphasizing his democratic credentials and dedication to his Katsina South constituents. Tinubu credited Ibrahim with playing a key role in forming and consolidating the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2013, as well as consistently advocating for peace and national unity within the party.
Describing Ibrahim as a patriot devoted to public service and the nation’s welfare, Tinubu expressed gratitude for his support during the 2023 presidential campaign and his ongoing counsel to the Renewed Hope administration. The President concluded by praying for the senator’s good health and continued strength to serve the country, lauding his life of loyalty, courage, and exceptional patriotism.
