“We Are Ordinary Humans” – Justice Agim Breaks Silence On Cult Rumours In Judiciary.
Justice Emmanuel Agim of the Supreme Court has dismissed claims that judges in Nigeria belong to secret cults, insisting that conscience, integrity, and godliness remain the true pillars of judicial service.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in Abuja at the Legacy Dialogue 2.0 organised by the Johnny Agim SAN (JASAN) Foundation, themed “Institutionalisation of Mentorship in the Legal Profession: A Strategic Blueprint for Professional Development,” Justice Agim described such accusations as both absurd and offensive.
According to Nivo News, the jurist stated that his faith guides his life and work, adding that it is impossible for anyone to serve God while being involved in evil. “I have a conscience. Otherwise, I should not be attending the Holy Trinity Parish or even praying. God is my fortress and refuge. You cannot be evil and expect God to be all of that to you,” he said.
He revealed that despite his devotion, some acquaintances often joke that judges belong to cults, a claim he dismissed as false. “We are ordinary human beings,” he added.
Justice Agim expressed concern over the decline of ethics and discipline among today’s lawyers, lamenting that many practitioners are now driven by ambition rather than the pursuit of justice. “When I was a lawyer, we knew what the law said and how our opponents would argue. But now, people go to court to win, not to get justice,” he remarked.
He also criticised the poor reading culture among young legal professionals who, according to him, often comment publicly on judgments they have not read. “Some lawyers hold judgments in their hands but never study them. They go on television to display ignorance with confidence. It’s a shame,” he said.
Justice Agim, who has delivered over 600 judgments, maintained that ignorance remains a major cause of corruption in the judiciary. “If a lawyer knows the law, it’s difficult for him to act unethically. If a judge knows the law, it’s difficult for him to be corrupt. But ignorance is bliss,” he stated.
He urged both judges and lawyers to rededicate themselves to knowledge, conscience, and service to justice, describing them as the foundations that sustain public trust in the judiciary.
Delivering the keynote address, retired Supreme Court Justice Ejembi Eko warned that the future of Nigeria’s legal profession is endangered due to the absence of structured mentorship for young lawyers. Represented by Justice Mabel T. Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Eko stressed that while the number of legal practitioners has grown, mentorship has not kept pace.
“We multiplied numbers without multiplying mentors. Any profession that leaves its young ones unguided loses its future,” he warned, calling for the establishment of a National Mentorship Council to strengthen ethical standards and training within the judiciary and Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
In his contribution, Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo (SAN), who chairs the NBA Mentorship Committee, described mentorship as a national necessity for preserving the integrity of the legal profession. “Mentorship is not just a duty; it’s a profound responsibility we owe our future leaders,” he said.
Ajulo commended the JASAN Foundation for its initiatives, including scholarship programmes and mentorship platforms, describing them as crucial to shaping a new generation of ethical lawyers.
Founder and President of the Foundation, Johnny Agim (SAN), reiterated the organisation’s commitment to grooming 500 young lawyers within the next decade through mentorship and sponsorship. He noted that the ₦1 billion Endowment Fund for Legal Education launched in 2024 had already begun supporting aspiring lawyers through scholarships and training.
The event, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, drew legal luminaries, senior advocates, and young practitioners who shared ideas on restoring excellence and professionalism within the legal system.
Justice Agim concluded with a powerful message that earned him a standing ovation: “You cannot be evil and expect God to be your refuge. Integrity, conscience, and knowledge of the law must remain the bedrock of our judicial calling.”
