According to Nivo News, the actress revealed that she began her acting career in 1996, taking on minor roles while facing multiple rejections during auditions. Despite the early setbacks, her perseverance paid off when she landed the lead role that eventually changed her life.
“I made that around 1999. I started my career from 1996, playing waka pass roles, then in 1997, I went for countless auditions and got a lot of ‘nos.’ Then I finally got one big ‘yes’ with I Need to Know—that’s how I made my first ₦1 million,” she recounted.
Akindele also recalled nearly losing the iconic role due to overacting during the pilot shoot. “I almost lost the role of Bisi. The director told me I was overacting and needed to go home, study the script again, and understand the character better,” she said.
She explained that it was her younger sister who helped her refine the teenage mannerisms required for the role. “My sister asked to see the script, started reading it, and began speaking like a teenager. I picked it up from there, and that was how I got the character right,” she revealed.
Speaking about how she spent the life-changing sum, the actress said her first move was to show the money to her mother, who advised her to pay her tithe. Afterward, she went on a shopping spree to improve her wardrobe.
“What did I do with one million naira? I showed it to my mom, and she told me to pay my tithe first. After that, I went to Yaba market because I had very few shoes and clothes. I changed my wardrobe completely—the girl that had no shoes yesterday had them all today,” she said with a smile.
The celebrated actress, who has since risen to become one of Nollywood’s most successful filmmakers, described the experience as a defining moment in her career, teaching her the value of perseverance, humility, and growth.

Even if TikTok carries it, you still need money to keep it on the charts because people have short attention spans, and there’s no guarantee you’ll get your money back.”
