JALINGO, Nigeria — Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has signed into law a ₦128.58 billion supplementary budget for the 2025 fiscal year, along with a ₦47.12 billion virement earlier approved by the Taraba State House of Assembly.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The signing, which took place over the weekend in Jalingo, marks another major financial step by the Kefas administration to address pressing funding needs in the state. The supplementary budget is aimed at supporting key sectors such as security, infrastructure, and economic development.

Governor Kefas said the new fiscal measures will allow his administration to respond swiftly to economic challenges and deliver on ongoing projects. “This supplementary budget is aimed at addressing urgent funding needs in critical sectors of the state,” the governor said shortly after signing the document.

He added that the budget will help sustain developmental momentum amid inflationary pressures and shifting national economic realities. According to him, the additional funds will be directed toward sectors that directly impact citizens’ welfare and the state’s long-term growth.

The ₦47.12 billion virement approved by the House of Assembly gives the government authority to reallocate funds between ministries and projects without increasing the total size of the state’s 2025 budget. This, officials say, ensures greater flexibility in managing available resources while keeping fiscal discipline intact.

Atiku Sounds Alarm: Protecting Traditional Institutions From Government Overreach

Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, Hon. John Bonzena, who witnessed the signing, said the Assembly approved the measures after careful scrutiny. He noted that lawmakers are committed to ensuring the funds are used transparently and efficiently to improve the lives of Tarabans.

“With this approval, we expect all ministries and departments to deliver tangible results within the time frame,” Bonzena said. “Oversight will be strict to ensure accountability.”

According to budget office officials, the supplementary funds will be used to complete ongoing infrastructure projects, improve healthcare and education facilities, and strengthen security operations in rural areas. The government also plans to channel part of the funds toward job creation and youth empowerment programs.

Economic analysts say the move aligns with steps taken by other Nigerian states to adjust their fiscal plans in response to rising costs and revenue fluctuations. They note that supplementary budgets have become necessary as governments face new spending needs not captured in the original appropriation.

“This is a smart fiscal adjustment,” said Abuja-based economist Musa Danjuma. “If properly managed, it could help Taraba State stay on course with its development agenda despite national economic headwinds.”

Civil society groups have welcomed the signing but urged the government to ensure transparency in how the new funds are spent. “We want to see visible results on the ground — better roads, safer communities, and functional schools,” said Mary Yakubu, a local development advocate in Jalingo.

The Taraba State Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning said the detailed breakdown of the supplementary budget will soon be made public. Implementation of the new fiscal plan is expected to begin immediately, with the aim of completing major projects before the end of 2025.

Governor Kefas’s decision highlights the state’s continued focus on fiscal responsiveness and development. As Taraba faces the dual challenges of limited revenue and rising demand for services, the success of this supplementary budget will depend on prudent management, transparency, and timely project execution.

Multiple factions are now locked in a struggle for control of the party, leaving members uncertain about the legitimate leadership structure.

One faction is led by John Akpanudodehe, a former National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while another is headed by the embattled state chairman, Dick Duke.

Although the leader of a third faction could not be immediately confirmed, findings indicate that another group also exists within the party.

Sources further suggest that the Akpanudodehe-led faction is seeking to remove the current chairman through a recently held congress that has sparked controversy.

In response, Dick Duke convened a stakeholders’ meeting over the weekend, where he rejected the legitimacy of the said congress.

He said the party had formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to distance itself from the exercise, citing a subsisting court order.

According to him, his tenure as state chairman is still valid until May, and any congress conducted before then would be unlawful.

Duke added that the party would only proceed with proper congresses after the expiration of his tenure and the resolution of legal issues, in line with due process.
