The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has clarified that no inmate granted presidential pardon under the recent exercise of the President’s prerogative of mercy has been released, as the process is still undergoing final administrative procedures.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Fagbemi made this known in a statement issued by his office in Abuja, noting that the presidential clemency initiative has not yet reached its implementation stage.

He explained that the process remains at its concluding phase, which involves a mandatory review to verify that all names and recommendations meet the required legal and procedural standards before any release order is issued.

Fagbemi stressed that after the Council of State’s approval, the final stage entails the formal issuance of instruments that authorise the release of qualified beneficiaries. This stage, he noted, allows for a last round of scrutiny to correct any potential errors before the document is transmitted to the Controller-General of Corrections for necessary action.

The AGF emphasised that the verification process is a standard government protocol designed to uphold transparency, due diligence, and accountability in the exercise of the President’s mercy powers.

He appreciated Nigerians for their vigilance and constructive engagement, stating that such public interest demonstrates a shared commitment to justice and good governance.

“There is no delay in the process,” he said. “It is simply proceeding according to legal requirements to ensure that only those duly qualified benefit from the President’s pardon. The rule of law does not rush; it ensures fairness.”

Fagbemi assured that once all legal and procedural checks are completed, the government will officially announce the release of those approved for clemency.
