“From Sweat To Sorrow: Inside Nigeria’s Broken Agricultural Economy”.
Across the rural landscapes of Nigeria—from the farms of Kaduna to the fields of Gwagwalada in the Federal Capital Territory—a silent crisis persists. Farmers, the backbone of the nation’s food system, continue to grapple with unrelenting hardship, watching their sweat yield little reward. What should be a season of abundance often becomes a time of despair, as economic and structural challenges choke the nation’s agricultural heart.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to Nivo News, the plight of Nigerian farmers is rooted in a cruel paradox: while the cost of agricultural inputs such as fertilizer, improved seeds, quality pesticides, and fuel continues to soar, the prices of farm produce plummet at harvest time. This imbalance leaves farmers trapped in debt, forced to sell their produce at rock-bottom prices just to survive or repay loans taken during the planting season.
Middlemen and bulk marketers, exploiting the farmers’ desperation, purchase produce cheaply during the harvest glut. They store it until the off-season, when scarcity drives prices up, reaping huge profits at the expense of the producers. The real profit, therefore, is not made on the farm but in the manipulation of the market—a system that rewards opportunism over hard work.
This recurring cycle of exploitation has drained the enthusiasm of many farmers, especially the youth, who see agriculture as a path to poverty rather than prosperity. Experts warn that if this trend continues, the nation’s food security will be at grave risk.
Nivo News reports that agricultural analysts are calling on the government to intervene urgently. They propose a Guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) for key staple crops, ensuring farmers are not forced to sell below production cost. They also recommend the establishment of community-level storage facilities and silos, enabling farmers’ cooperatives to store produce, regulate supply, and negotiate better prices later in the year.
Additionally, the government is urged to stabilize input prices, ensure transparent subsidy distribution, and revitalize extension services that can train farmers on modern storage, cooperative management, and market strategy.
Experts further suggest the creation of a low-interest market intervention fund, providing short-term financial support so farmers are not compelled to sell immediately after harvest. There are also calls for a consumer awareness campaign to link urban buyers directly with rural producers, cutting out exploitative middlemen.
The time for rhetoric is over. Protecting the farmer, stakeholders insist, means protecting the nation’s food future. Until Nigeria addresses the imbalance of rising production costs and collapsing market prices, the dust of disappointment will continue to settle over the country’s farmlands—turning fields of hope into fields of despair.
