Court Kicks Off Senator Anyanwu’s ₦550m Defamation Battle Against Ex-Governor Ohakim.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has commenced hearing in the ₦550 million defamation lawsuit filed by Senator Chris Anyanwu against former Imo State governor, Ikedi Ohakim.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, the case began on Monday with Anyanwu’s legal team, led by Umeh Kalu (SAN) and Adekunle Kosoko, calling their first witness, Dr. Joyce Ejukonemu, a Gender Protection Specialist and Senior Researcher. Dr. Ejukonemu testified that she read the alleged defamatory statement contained in the January 12 edition of a national newspaper and confirmed adopting her written deposition as evidence before the court.

Justice M.I. Sani admitted the witness’ written statement as evidence, as well as a copy of the publication in question, despite objections from Ohakim’s counsel, Ken Njemanze (SAN). The judge overruled Njemanze’s argument challenging the admissibility of the documents.

During the proceedings, Kalu also presented additional documents, including a January 24 press release and a report printed from an online platform. However, Njemanze objected, arguing that the online report lacked a certificate of compliance as required under Section 84 of the Evidence Act and that the press release was a photocopy without proper foundation.

In response, Kalu insisted that the certification under Section 84 could be either oral or written and that the witness’ oath statement satisfied the requirement. He, however, chose to withdraw the press release from evidence.

Earlier in the day, Justice Sani dismissed an objection raised by Njemanze challenging the commencement of trial on the grounds that a pre-trial conference had not been held. The judge ruled that such a conference was not mandatory and would only delay proceedings unnecessarily.

In a related development, the court granted a request by Anyanwu’s counsel to discontinue the case against Vintage Press Limited, publishers of The Nation newspaper, after the company issued a public retraction and apology to the claimant. Justice Sani accordingly struck out the media house’s name from the suit.

Senator Anyanwu is demanding ₦550 million in damages and a public apology to be published in two national newspapers, over comments allegedly made by Ohakim in an interview that she claims tarnished her reputation. The court has adjourned further hearing to December 1, 3, and 5, 2025, for ruling and continuation of the trial.
