According to Nivo News, Kalu made this appeal during a courtesy visit to Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, alongside members of the House Committee on Constitution Review. He acknowledged the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) for their consistent collaboration in the reform process, describing their role as indispensable to achieving a more effective and people-driven constitution.
The Deputy Speaker also praised the Conference of Speakers for their contributions and urged them to fast-track their part of the process once the alteration bills reach the state assemblies. He revealed that the committee was at the final stage of preparations leading to parliamentary voting on the proposed constitutional amendments.
“We are appealing to you because we need you,” Kalu stated, emphasizing that the success of the review depends on synergy between the federal, state, and local governments. He urged Governor Mbah to convey appreciation to other governors for their continued support, while encouraging them to sustain their engagement until the process is finalized.
Kalu noted that the governors’ cooperation was essential, stressing that without their backing, the review would face significant delays. He called on them to liaise with their respective Houses of Assembly to ensure swift consideration of the constitutional review documents.
The lawmaker expressed optimism that with the continued support of progressive-minded governors, the committee would soon deliver a constitution that reflects the aspirations of Nigerians. He highlighted that citizens desire a legal framework that strengthens local government autonomy, promotes women’s participation in politics, ensures electoral justice, and enhances fiscal federalism and accountability.
In his remarks, Governor Peter Mbah commended Kalu’s leadership and the inclusive nature of the process, noting that the zonal public hearings and retreats have made the review more transparent and participatory. He lauded the Deputy Speaker for his dedication to national development and expressed confidence that the exercise would produce a constitution that truly works for all Nigerians.
