FNSB Marks 70 Years Of Hope, Urges Nigerians To Support The Blind

Published

on

The Federal Nigeria Society for the Blind (FNSB) has called on Nigerians to strengthen their support for the empowerment, rehabilitation, and inclusion of visually impaired persons across the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking at the Society’s 70th Anniversary Gala and Fundraising Dinner in Lagos, Chairman of the Executive Council, Mrs. Arit Tunde-Imoyo, noted that the event’s theme, “Vision Without Eyes: Striving for Excellence,” reflects the organisation’s belief that true vision lies beyond physical sight — in purpose, determination, and the ability to turn challenges into opportunities.

According to Nivo News, Tunde-Imoyo stated that through its Vocational Training Centre (VTC) in Oshodi, the Society has empowered over 5,000 visually impaired men and women with education and practical skills that promote self-reliance and productivity.

“Our mission is not just about rehabilitation but about restoration,” she said. “Through the Eye Bank for Sight Restoration, we help individuals for whom blindness is curable regain their sight. Every restored life reminds us that blindness does not end opportunity.”

She urged more volunteers and professionals to join the Society’s committees and council, emphasizing that collective effort remains vital for sustaining the organisation’s success.

“The funds raised at this gala will support our training programmes, upgrade our facilities, and introduce new technologies that prepare our trainees for the evolving job market. Every donation tonight is an investment in human potential,” Tunde-Imoyo added.

The evening featured a fashion show by students of the Vocational Training Centre, showcasing their creativity and craftsmanship.

Dr. Goddie Isibo, a Council member and Chairman of the Strategy Committee, described FNSB’s 70-year journey as one of restoring hope and dignity to people who had once lost it. He noted that many beneficiaries were professionals who lost their sight later in life but have since rebuilt their careers through training and technological tools.

“With assistive software, our trainees can now work as accountants, HR managers, and other professionals. We provide them a second chance at living purposeful and productive lives,” he said, stressing that FNSB’s success has largely been driven by public donations rather than government funding.

Mr. Woji Weli, another member of the Executive Council, highlighted the importance of social inclusion, urging Nigerians to better understand the realities faced by the blind. “The visually impaired are first of all human beings whose needs deserve recognition and support. Everyone — from individuals to corporations — has a role in improving their lives,” he said.

Vice Chairman of the Society and Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Mrs. Oluyemisi Daramola, praised the achievements of the trainees, noting that many have become successful entrepreneurs. “Everything showcased here tonight was made by our students. One of our graduates in Osogbo now exports his products to the US and UK — and he is completely blind,” she said.

Executive Secretary of the Society, Mr. Oluwamayowa Oke, described the 70th anniversary as a moment of gratitude and renewal. “This milestone is not only a celebration of seventy years of impact but also of the people — our past leaders, staff, and families — who made it possible,” he said.

He added that the anniversary also serves as a renewed call for collaboration. “We invite more individuals, organisations, and institutions to partner with us in sustaining our work at the Vocational Training Centre, our Eye Bank for sight restoration, and our mission of transforming blindness into a story of courage and achievement,” Oke concluded.

According to him, NAF air platforms successfully engaged the targets using precision-guided munitions, destroying the structures, neutralising multiple terrorists, and dismantling key logistics facilities. This was later confirmed through battle damage assessments.

The statement added that sustained air operations have continued to weaken terrorist networks, disrupting their activities and forcing them into more defensive and unstable responses.
