Teachers Rejoice As Niger Lifts Retirement Age, Promises Cash Award and Welfare Support.

According to Nivo News, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago made the declaration during the 2025 World Teachers’ Day celebration organized by the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Minna. He also revealed that the retirement age for professors has been extended to 70 years to preserve the transfer of knowledge and experience to younger generations.
Governor Bago further lifted the suspension on the payment of Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) levies, stating that such collections would now be monitored by the Ministry of Education to ensure accountability and effective use.
Reaffirming his administration’s dedication to improving teachers’ welfare, Bago announced a ₦20,000 wage award for all teachers in the state to be paid next month. He also donated an 18-seater bus to the NUT Niger State chapter to aid its operations and mobility.
The governor lauded teachers for their vital contributions to national development, assuring them of his government’s continued support and protection of their interests.
In his remarks, the NUT Chairman in Niger State, Comrade Adamu Mohammed Akayago, highlighted that this year’s celebration underscores the critical role teachers play as builders of the nation’s collective future. He emphasized the need for all stakeholders to prioritize teachers’ welfare, dignity, and professional recognition.
Delivering the keynote address, the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the National Examinations Council (NECO), Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, described teachers as national security assets and essential drivers of civic responsibility. He urged the government and society to renew their commitment to empowering and uplifting the teaching profession.
