According to a statement from the Chief Registrar of the High Court of Ogun State, Olakulehin Oke, eight magistrates will preside over cases drawn from Sagamu, Mowe, Ojodu Abiodun, and Isara Magisterial Districts. The exercise will involve accelerated hearings, case reviews, and consideration of non-custodial measures where applicable under the law.
“This initiative reflects the continued commitment of the Honourable Chief Judge, Justice M. A. Dipeolu, to strengthen criminal justice administration, uphold human rights, and ensure effective management of custodial facilities across Ogun State,” Oke said. He emphasized that all procedures will comply with legal standards, safeguarding the rights of all individuals involved, particularly those in custody.
The intervention week will be conducted in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Nigeria Police, the Nigerian Bar Association, security agencies, and other justice-sector stakeholders. The Chief Registrar assured the public that the program seeks to enhance justice delivery, reduce unnecessary delays, and tackle prison congestion without compromising public safety or due process.
Justice Dipeolu highlighted that over 8,000 defendants have been granted bail under the Ogun Bondsmen Scheme since its inception five years ago, significantly reducing correctional facility congestion and addressing inefficiencies in the state’s bail system.
