In a statement released in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Markus Kangye, explained that the troops intensified patrols and aerial surveillance to combat crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, and other forms of economic sabotage in the region.
During the operations, security forces recovered 49,321 litres of crude oil, 6,970 litres of Automotive Gas Oil, 1,900 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene, and 1,475 litres of Premium Motor Spirit. They also destroyed 21 cooking ovens, nine dugout pits, 11 storage tanks, seven boats, and seized various equipment used for large-scale bunkering, including generators, hoses, and pumping machines. Several suspects were also arrested in connection with the crimes.
The operations, carried out in Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers States with support from other security agencies, successfully dismantled multiple oil theft networks.
Maj.-Gen. Kangye reaffirmed the military’s determination to sustain the fight against economic saboteurs, stressing that crude oil theft poses a severe threat to both the nation’s economy and environmental safety. He also appealed to host communities to provide timely intelligence to aid the military in tracking and disrupting criminal syndicates.
He emphasized that future operations would continue to focus on dismantling the entire chain of illegal oil operations — from refining to storage and transportation — until the menace is eradicated.
